  • Calculating Shipment Volumes

This will look like a newbie question but I could really use the help. I am having difficulty getting OTM to recognize container capacities. When planning shipments, I cannot get OTM to break an order release into multiple containers. As an example, OTM will load a 300,000 pound shipment onto a single truckload instead of breaking into multiple truckloads based upon the stated capacity of weight and volume. Where do I link the container capacity so that OTM will appropriately split these orders into the required number of containers?

Thanks very much for the help!

You will need to ask yourself the following question, are you modeling 1 equipment = 1 truck? If, so you need to be aware that:
    1) OTM implicitly assumes that for FTL modelling, it is 1 shipment = 1 equipment. In other words, 1 shipment - 1 truck
    2) If you want to have 1 shipment - multiple trucks, you will have difficulty when doing partial tendering

After having been aware of this, there are several things to look out for:
    1) Make sure your leg configuration in your itinerary is:
    a. Create Single Shipment (checked)
    b. Auto Consolidation Type = Console into 1 Ship Multiple Equipment
    c. Equipment Assignment Type = Optimise Equipment
    d. Equipment Group Profile ID = <your equipment group profile>

    2) Make sure your Order Release has the following checked:
    a. Order Release Header - Splittable (checked)
    b. Order Release Ship Unit - Bulk Splittable (checked)
    c. Order Release Ship Unit - Count Splittable (checked)

The above configuration is for 1 shipment - multiple equipment. To change it to 1 shipment - 1 equipment, just
    1) Uncheck Create Single Shipment on your itinerary leg
    2) Set the Auto Consolidation Type = Console Into 1 Equipment

    Hope this helps!

        Re: Calculating Shipment Volumes

        Ian,

I did exactly as you instructed in your reply and I am still getting the same result. There is 1 truck that is filled with 300,000 pounds of product. In the equipment group, it is explicity stated that the maximum weight for this equipment is 30,000 lbs. OTM seems to know this - if I review the Shipment View results of the bulk planning, it shows that the weight utilization is 1,000% and the volume utilization is 298%.

Is there something else I could be missing that would allow the truck to be filled beyond its known capacity?

        Thanks.

          Re: Calculating Shipment Volumes

          Hi Ed,

Did you modify any planning parameters or are you using the default one shipped with OTM? There is a planning parameter FULL SHIPMENT CAPACITY PERCENTAGE THRESHOLD it should be 100.

Are you building shipments via Ground Schedules? If so, when you create the shipment, under the Equipment tab, you need to uncheck Ignore Equipment Capacity.

Can you also post screen captures of the following:
          1) Itinerary Lane configuration
          2) Equipment Configuration
          3) Order Release (ship unit and line item)
          4) Shipment

          Ian

            Re: Calculating Shipment Volumes

            hi,

May be you should check Itinerary - Leg - Equipment option - select CONSOL INTO ONE SHIP MULTI EQUIP - as the AUTO CONSOLIDATION TYPE and try your scenario.

                  Hi Ianlo,

The similar case i have tried for container group funtionality for charter voyage consol. But I Cannot move the third order release to the consol shipment. Otm throws an Error "OTM found no valid consol shipments".

Still I have weight and volume remaining in my consol.
                  Thanks,
                  Vidya

                    Re: Calculating Shipment Volumes

                    Hi vidya,

Which version of OTM are you using? Are you using order movements?
If you are using CU3, I think there was a bug that did made adding order movements to shipments fail. I believe there were some bug fixes and enhancements made on CU4 and above that made adding of order movements to shipments work.

The other thing is that if you have multiple equipments to 1 shipment, you CANNOT add order movements or order releases onto the shipment.

Order Movement’s move to an existing shipment will only work under following conditions:
·There is only one equipment in the shipment
·There is an equipment defined in the itinerary/carrier rates that is able to accommodate the whole ship units being merged together (original ship units in shipment plus those belonging from the OM being moved)
If above conditions are not met, system will not permit the merging of the OM to the existing shipment and returns an error. This is the behaviour for CU3

                    Hope this helps

                      Hi Ialno,

Thank you for your reply. version which we are working is CU4.

But as per help, Container groups can be added manually that occurs when you book a unitized order on a voyage using the order release action, Build Shipment on Primary Leg.

And I have given a Equipment group in the Itinerary with four type of container. In that case the order Release should get added to the consol shipment till it hits the Allocated volume right. But when I try to plan the third OR to the consol shipment Otm throws an Error "OTM found no valid consol shipments".
Can you please help on this?

                      Regards,
                      vidya.
                      Thanks,

                        Hi vidya,

Hmm... I am afraid I don't know why. I have not had any experience with Consols and hence would not be able to advise you any further. I do apologise. My experience has mainly been with domestic trucking.

Does anyone else know how to help vidya?
